GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport University will be adding the sport of men's volleyball and pompon beginning the 2015-16 academic year, director of athletics
Paul Lowden announced Tuesday. The search for a head coach for each program begins immediately and those interested in applying for the positions can visit the
Davenport Human Resources website.
Men's volleyball and pompon will be the 33rd and 34th programs to be added to the athletic department and will compete as non-varsity sports.
"This is an excellent time to be adding men's volleyball and pompon to our athletic department," Lowden said. "Sponsoring men's volleyball helps move the sport a step closer to creating a championship in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Davenport hosts very successful pompon camps in the summer. It is a great fan engagement program. It is a great addition to our sport offerings.
Davenport becomes the 27th school in the NAIA to sponsor men's volleyball and the third in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference after Siena Heights and Lourdes. The association currently has it as an emerging sport and will declare it a championship sport once it has 50 teams.
Pompon will serve as a support role to the basketball teams and the upcoming football program in 2016 in addition to competitive cheer and dance on the sidelines.
