Box Score BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – After advancing to the GLCHL Semifinal for the fourth straight season, the Davenport D1 hockey team looked to make their third straight trip to the conference championship game.
Winston Hofer was able to net the game-winning goal in overtime to beat Western Michigan 3-2, and send the Panthers to the GLCHL Finals. Davenport will face Adrian in the conference championship for the third straight season on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Battle Creek, Mich.
Western Michigan opened up the scoring in the game to take an early 1-0 lead in the game, but the Panthers were able to comr right back as
Jordan Simmonds got Davenport on the board to tie the game 1-1. Western Michigan was able to score one more time in the first period to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Davenport was able to start shifting the momentum in the second period as they controlled the pace of play, but the Panthers were unable to score in the second period as the Stallions held on to a one goal lead going into the third period.
In the third period, Davenport was able to control the game and
Luke McCarthy was able to tie the game for the Panthers. DU was able to kill off a power play in the final minutes of the third period to send the game into overtime.
Winston Hofer was able to score the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Panthers a 3-2 win and send them to the GLCHL Championship as
Clayton Brown picked up the win in net.
The win over Western Michigan was also his 100th win as head coach of the D1 hockey team after taking over the team in the 2011-12 season.
Davenport will now head back to Battle Creek, Mich., for the GLCHL Finals against Adrian at 2:30 p.m. This is the third straight season that Davenport and Adrian have met in the GLCHL Finals with each team winning once in the last two meetings.
