GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team opened their postseason schedule on Thursday night as they hosted Siena Heights.
Dominez Burnett scored 24 points to lead all scorers in the game with 24 points, as the Panthers beat the Saints 68-58. Davenport now moves onto the WHAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, when they host Aquinas at the DU Student Center at 3 p.m.
Burnett scored 24 points in the game for Davenport and capped off a double-double with 11 rebounds, which led the team.
Bishop Robinson chipped in with 15 points off the bench to cap off the Davenport scorers in double figures.
To start the game, Davenport and Siena Heights battled back-and-forth, and the Saints were able to take their largest lead of the game with 12:07 left in the first half as they led 14-10. However, Davenport went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-14 lead with 9:04 left in the second half. Davenport was able to stretch their lead to as many as eight points on four different occasions, but Siena Heights hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Davenport lead to 29-27 at the half.
The Panthers started on a 12-2 run in the second half, to take a 41-29 lead with 14:09 left in the second half, and Davenport took their largest lead of the game with 13:17 left in the game as they led 43-30, but Siena Heights chipped away at the Davenport lead. The Saints brought the lead down to four points twice, but the Panthers were able were able to create some separation down the stretch as they beat the Saints 68-58.
The Panthers will now move onto the WHAC Semifinals on Saturday, where they will host Aquinas at the DU Student Center at 3 p.m.
Post-Game NotesAfter being held to under 20 points in his previous four games,
Dominez Burnett has broken the 20 point barrier in his last two games… The Panthers move to 10-5 in the WHAC Tournament under coach Paddock and the program is now at 10-8 all-time.
