No. 2 Panthers Downs Cornerstone to Advance to WHAC Title Game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Seniors Linnea Brandholm and Kia Frazier combined for 27 points, Molly Babbs brought down five rebounds and had three steals as the No. 2 Davenport women's basketball team picked up its 30th win of the season with a 76-57 victory over archrival Cornerstone in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal Saturday afternoon.
 
The Panthers will host the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Madonna and Siena Heights for the WHAC Tournament championship Monday at 7:30 p.m. That game is schedule for 5:30 p.m. start with the winner receiving the second automatic berth to the NAIA Division II Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa beginning March 11.
 
Brandholm went 6-for-12 from the floor, including three of the Panthers (30-0) four 3-point baskets, for 15 points. Frazier, meanwhile, had four field goals but went a perfect 5-for-5 on the free throw line to finish with 13 points.
 
Altogether, the Panthers shot 45 percent overall and went 18-for-24 from the charity stripe.
 
Davenport did get out-rebounded by Cornerstone (22-10) 41-39 overall. Veteran Jill Hendrickson had a double-double of 22 points and 13 boards while Ashley Niedermayer closed the book on her collegiate career with eight points and rebounds each.
 
Cornerstone finished the day shooting 37.9 percent from the field and went 9-for-15 on the free throw line.
 
The Golden Eagles and Panthers traded off the lead early in the ball game until a 14-4 momentum gave Davenport a 28-15 lead with 6:19 left in the first period.
 
Davenport went into the break with a 35-27 lead. Five different Panthers scored four points for a team-most in the period and only had one 3-pointer.
 
Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves to 17-9 in the all-time series with Cornerstone…The Panthers improve to 35-15 in the Battle of the Beltline against both the Golden Eagles and Aquinas…Davenport picks up its seventh straight season with 30 wins.
