Bender’s Big Day Powers Baseball in Doubleheader Sweep Over Viterbo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Brendan Bender threw six scoreless innings in game one and went 5-6 with two homeruns and five RBIs in both games, Corey Sessions threw 4.2 innings allowing two runs and tallying four strikeouts as the No. 13 Davenport Baseball team picked up a 9-1 and 6-2 doubleheader sweep over Viterbo of Wisconsin to improve to 13-2 on the season. The Panthers and Hawks will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a single nine inning game.
 
Game 1 – Davenport 9, Viterbo 1
The Panthers scored two runs on the first after a Matt Priebe sac fly and a Viterbo error. In the third, Bender connected on his first of two homeruns with a two-run shot, followed by an RBI singles from Tyler Baratono and Connor Seymour. Bender would then launch his second homerun of the game in the eigth, followed by a sac fly in the sixth to found out his four RBI's and give the Panthers a 9-0 lead before Viterbo was able to put a lone score on the board.
 
Dre Celestijn was 3-4 on the day with two doubles and two runs scored, as well as recording two stolen bases.
 
In his third outing of the season, Bender earned his first win by throwing six scoreless innings, accounting for seven hits and zero strikeouts.
 
Game 2 – Davenport 6, Viterbo 2
The Panthers erupted for five runs in the second after a sac fly from Zack Sardellitti in the first inning, starting with one-run triple from Seymour. Seymour then scored on a Viterbo error, which then led to an RBI knock by Bender to give him five total in both games. Sardellitti continued the Panther assault with double down the right field line to score both Bender and Celestijn, putting the Panthers up 6-0 through four.
 
The Hawks would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth after Steve Pascual knocked in two runs to cut the lead to 6-2. The Panthers were able to keep Viterbo scoreless after that, finishing the game with a 6-2 victory.
 
Brendan Bender tallied two more hits with an RBI and a walk, and Sardellitti knocked in three runs of his own including a two run double. Corey Sessions threw 4.2 innings of work allowing two earned runs on seven hits and collected four strikeouts.
