GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Samantha Powers made 12 of her 13 saves in the first half as Davenport's second-ranked women's lacrosse team had to play defense for a majority of the game against NCAA Division II Fort Lewis on the Turf Field Monday. The Sky Hawks would score five goals in each half in their 10-5 win and hand the Panthers their first loss of the season.
Sara Kuzava led the effort for the Panthers (5-1) with two goals,
Paige VanWieren,
Jessica Lemcke and
Hanna Bush each found the back of the net once.
Fort Lewis (4-1), which is making a tour in the Grand Rapids area, was led by Ellie Carpenter's four goals and Sara McMahon's three. The Sky Hawks outshot the Panthers 29-10.
The Panthers had trouble taking care of the ball throughout the contest, conceding 16 turnovers in each period and losing the ground ball department 16-28. DU also committed 28 fouls on the day.
Davenport did strike first with goals by Kuzava at 19:57 and VanWieren at 16:21. But the Sky Hawks rallied and took a 3-2 lead at 6:55. The Panthers answered back 21 seconds later when Lemcke found the back of the net. Fort Lewis broke the tie and added one more to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room.
After playing the last three games at home, the Panthers will leave the Turf Field for the next five games starting with Beltline rivals Aquinas Wednesday at 5 p.m. After the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup, Davenport heads south to Georgetown, Ky., for three games highlighted by No. 1 SCAD Sunday at 11 a.m. EDT.
