Men’s Lacrosse Holds on Against Pittsburgh for Fifth Consecutive Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior Parker Horvath led the charge with five scores and an assist, while freshman Bryan Larocque tacked on four more scores, and Devon Benson recorded a hat-trick of his own to lead the no. 21 Davenport Men's Lacrosse team to a 16-15 victory over CCLA foe Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon at East Grand Rapids High School. The Panthers will play their third game in six days on Tuesday at Grand Valley State with the opening drop scheduled for 6 p.m.

Pittsburgh got on the board first to start things off in the first period, but Larocque responded with two straight goals to put the Panthers up 2-1, followed by a Jimmy Fata score from Jimmy DeJaeger to put the Panthers up three just six minutes into the contest. Eleven goals were scored in the first quarter alone between the two teams, including three from Larocque and two from Horvath.

Pittsburgh was able to regain the lead as they scored two unanswered goals to begin the second period, but Horvath was able to tie things up at 9:43, followed by Fata's second score to give the game it's third different lead change. After Pittsburgh tied it up at 8-8, Benson scored his first of three goals on the day, sending the Panthers into the halftime break up 10-8.

The game score never went beyond a two-goal lead for the Panthers in the second half, but they maintained the lead for the remainder of the game, holding on with a 16-15 victory as the clock struck 0:00 in the fourth.

Mitchell Clay tallied his first goal of the season late in the fourth to give the Panthers a much needed two point lead, and Joe Lopez was also able to get in on the scoring action, as well as recording his first assist of the season.

Defending WHAC defensive player of the week Logan Poe came up huge for the Panthers again, claiming his seventh victory as a starter between the posts and recorded ten saves on the day.

The 8-5 Panthers will visit Grand Valley State this Tuesday with the opening faceoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
