Softball Goes 2-0 on Day 1 of WHAC Tournament to Stay in Winner’s Bracket

ROCKFORD, Mich. – The Davenport softball got the 2015 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament started on Wednesday evening with a pair of wins to stay in the winner's bracket. Davenport started the tournament with a 13-5 win over Lourdes in five innings, and the Panthers followed with a 3-0 win over crosstown rival Aquinas. Davenport will face UM-Dearborn on day two of the WHAC Tournament at 4:30 p.m. in a battle of the only 2-0 teams remaining in the tournament.
 
Game 1 – Davenport 13, Lourdes 5 (5)
Davenport got off to a strong start in the game as they struck for five runs in the first inning as Alyssa Eastman singled to centerfield to score KC Dunne and Alyssa Koziol, and Eastman scored later in the inning on a single from Carli SanMillan. Karli Myers closed out the first inning with a single to score SanMillan and Ashleigh Blovsky, to take a 5-0 lead after the first inning.
 
The Panthers had another big inning in the third inning as they score seven more runs to take a 12-0 lead after three innings. Eastman got the scoring started in the third inning with as she scored on a throwing error at home plate, and Obetts followed with a two run double to left center. Dunne drove in one run and Blovsky drove in two more runs to close out the inning.
 
Lourdes started to battle back in the top half of the fourth inning scoring four runs in the top half of the inning, and the Gray Wolves held the Panthers scoreless in the fourth inning, as Lourdes was able to cut the lead to 12-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Dunne was able to hit a walk-off homerun to center field to end the game in the fifth inning, 13-5.
 
Game 2 – Davenport 3, Aquinas 0
In game two of the night for Davenport, they took on crosstown rival Aquinas, the Panther offense settled down in the game as they only scored three runs in the game. Blovsky was able to get Davenport on the board in the top of the second inning with an RBI double to center field, and SanMillan followed with an RBI double of her own to score Blovsky and give the Panthers 2-0 lead after the second inning.
 
In the third inning, Eastman capped off the scoring in the game with a single to that scored Dunne to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
 
In circle, Emily Maves (22-4) had another strong outing as she only allowed two hits in the game and struck out 12 batters in the game, including six straight batters, while striking out the side in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Davenport now moves on in the winner's bracket as they face UM-Dearborn in a battle of the only two team that went 2-0 on day one of the tournament. The Panthers and Wolverines will start at 4:30 p.m. from the Art Van Sports Complex in Rockford, Mich.
