LEWISTON, Idaho – The Davenport baseball team's debut in the Avista-NAIA World Series was a rough one on a warm Wednesday night at Harris Field.
In a newbie versus experience matchup, Davenport was held to a season-low four hits and host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), making a record 34
th straight appearance in the World Series, tallied 11 of its own as the Warriors greeted the Panthers with a 6-2 win in the nightshift of the four-game opener.
The Panthers now enter a win-or-go-home situation in the elimination bracket. They face St. Thomas (Fla.) Saturday at 3 p.m.
Tied at two runs apiece in the home half of the sixth, the Warriors (42-11) opened up the inning with a triple to end
Brendan Bender's day on the mound.
Jonathan Cheshire got two quick outs but a wild pitch allowed the Warriors to break the tie.
Lewis-Clark State ran away with the lead by scoring three more runs in the seventh to take the 6-2 lead.
Bender, who fell to 8-2 on the year, struck out four but conceded six hits and three walks on 82 pitches. His opposite Ty Jackson received a no-decision despite allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. Beau Kerns went the rest of the way tossing four hitless and shutout innings.
Brandon Cable went 2-for-4 with two RBI. After
Jordan Zylstra hit a double, Cable scored the contest's first run with a single to center. The third baseman would tie the game with a solo shot to right center in the fifth.
