Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's Division I hockey team got off to a hot start and didn't cool off in a 9-0 win over John Carroll on Friday night. The season opener was all Panthers as they outshot JCU 54-7 at Patterson Ice Center. The No. 13 Panthers dominated the first period by scoring five goals.
Travis White opened up the scoring with a nice slap shot to the top right corner, assisted by
Cody Walsh. Shortly after the first goal, DU's
Kody Polin redirected a shot from the point to put DU ahead 2-0. Minutes later John Carroll took a penalty and DU capitalized on the opportunity with
Cameron Dimmitt putting it home from
Luke McCarthy and
Winston Hofer.
Alex Hulford then put it past John Carroll's Matt Russell to stretch Davenport's lead to 4-0. Moments later Polin recorded his second goal of the period and it was assisted by
Chris Eckler. In the second period, Davenport continued to dominate scoring another two goals, the first by Dimmitt and the second by
Alex Hulford.
The third period started off different from the other two. Both teams were moving the puck well and both had great scoring opportunities. With three minutes left in the third, Polin put his third goal of the game in the back of the net, assisted by
Stephen Flood and
Aaron Beally. Seconds later,
Matt Ogden recorded his first goal of the night. That was the end of the scoring spree for the Panthers as they concluded the game with a 9-0 victory.
