Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's Division I hockey team did not have an easy time on Saturday against John Carroll University after a 9-0 win the previous game. The Panthers had to overcome a 2-1 deficit in the second period and eventually pulled off a 4-3 overtime win improving to 2-0 this season.
After a scoreless first period, both teams lit up the scoreboard in the second. Each team scored three times and took that tie into the extra session after a scoreless third.
Matt Ogden scored early in the second with
Travis White and
Alex Hulford adding assists on the power play tally. The Blue Streaks answered back with a pair of goals including one on the power play at 2:15.
Winston Hofer tied the game 2-2 on the power play from Hulford and White.
Kody Polin gave DU a 3-2 advantage at 11:52 from
Jordan Simmonds. The Blue Streaks tied it up at 15:30 of the second on the power play and neither team could score the final 24:30 of regulation.
The Polin-Simmonds combo struck again but the roles reversed as Simmonds scored on the power play from Polin with 41 seconds left in overtime. The Panther power play meant everything going 3-for-4 while JCU was 2-for-5. Davenport outshot John Carroll 48-12 in the contest but Dustin Stevens kept his team in the game with 44 saves.
