No. 20 Lawrence Tech Pulls Off Upset of No. 5 Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 5 Panthers (14-3, 10-0) met the second place No. 20 Lawrence Tech Blue Devils (12-1, 9-1) Wednesday night and found themselves in a dogfight. LTU would hold the Panther offense in check all game as they forced DU into a low-scoring slugfest as the Panthers scored a season-low 59 points to fall to LTU, 64-59.

The Blue Devils started hot with a 13-0 run over the first 4:14 of the game and handed DU a tough deficit to overcome. The Panthers then had to fight the Lawrence Tech defense which came into the night ranked second in the WHAC in scoring defense, allowing just 59.4 points per game. Mallory Sewell would help the Panthers fight back into the game as she would record 10 first half points as Davenport fought back and overcame the early Lawrence Tech lead to tie the game at the break, 30-30.

The second half then saw the Panthers settle in early on and take over the lead as a Kendra Cook Layup with 9:10 left in the third quarter gave DU their first lead of the game. Davenport would battle to extend this lead to as many as eight points at a 51-43 lead with 8:49 left in the game.

The Blue Devils would respond as they would take a 17-2 run over the next 6:01 of the game to leave DU behind, 60-53, by seven points. Christina Henry led the charge for Lawrence Tech as she would record a double-double on 30 points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers would fight down the stretch to avoid the upset by LTU, but the Blue Devils would prove their lead to be too as DU fell. Sewell would finish with 14 points and six rebounds while Cook totaled 13 points and six rebounds. Amanda Merz would go on to record a career-high 10 rebounds.

Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells commented on the outcome, "I'm disappointed in the way we played tonight. We came out with a lack of intensity and no sense of urgency. We allowed Lawrence Tech to take us out of our game. We're not going to win many games scoring only 59 points."

The Blue Devils pulled off an upset that the Panthers seldom face as this loss snaps a 56-game overall WHAC winning streak and a 50-game WHAC regular season winning streak. This loss also snaps a 65-game home winning streak that dates back to February 8, 2012.
