GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's basketball team used torrid shooting from behind the arc in the first half making 8-of-13 and then cruised in the second half to an 88-72 win over visiting Northwestern Ohio. The Panthers (21-3, 15-1 WHAC) have now built a two-game lead in the conference standings due to Aquinas dropping a home game against Madonna. Davenport has won eight straight and are 10-2 at home this season. They also have beaten UNOH 11-of-13 meetings in the series.
The Panthers and Racers played a tight one in the first half as the teams were tied 14-14 six minutes into the game. DU scored the next eight points capped off by a three by
Jason Jordan. UNOH got back to within 26-22 at the 7:06 mark after a three by Davon Payne. The Racers maintained a three-point deficit at 36-33 with 3:11 left in the half after a Mike Chambers bucket. The Panthers closed the half on a 12-2 run and led 48-35 at intermission.
Lawrence Jackson canned back-to-back triples to get within 50-41 three minutes into the second half, but that was the last single-digit  deficit of the game. DU scored five straight to lead 55-41 with 14:27 remaining after
John McCloud split at the foul line. The lead ballooned to 71-51 with 8:54 to play after a
Kevin Rich lay-up on a no-look pass from
Andia Marsh. The Racers climbed back to 76-66 as Trey Guilliam knocked down a few three's and Scott Hollins converted a lay-in with 4:37 to go. DU scored the next five points and put the game away.
Dominez Burnett once again paced the Panthers with 27 points and pulled down nine defensive rebounds. Burnett went 10-of-18 from the floor and had four assists and two steals.
Wes Webbert was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor including 2-of-2 behind the arc to finish with 11 points. Rich scored 10 points and added four assists.
Wayne Bradford scored 10 points in 29 minutes.
Nick Gamble led the team with six assists and scored six points in 28 minutes.
Davenport shot 54.8 percent in the first half and 53.8 percent in the second half. They were 17-of-21 at the free throw line and outrebounded the athletic Racer squad, 35-24, with eight offensive boards.Â
