Panthers Run Win Streak to 11 with wins over Kent State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's Division I hockey team ran its win streak to 11 games dating back to Nov. 13 with a pair of wins this weekend against Kent State at Patterson Ice Center. The team was back in action for the first time in 2016 and didn't seem to skip a beat improving to 20-2-0-1 overall.

The No. 4 Panthers took care of the Golden Flashes 5-2 on Friday night. Everett Thompson ended 2015 with a hat trick and began this year with the team's first goal at 3:02 of the opening period with an assist from Adam Goudelock. Defenseman Walker Aurand came into the game with one goal all season but scored at 5:07 of the first for a 2-0 lead and again at 17:06 of the second to give DU a 3-1 lead. Alyx Fonseca and Jordan Simmonds assisted on his first goal and the tandem of Simmonds and Chris Eckler assisted on the other.

Jonathon Buttitta and Chance Taylor kept it close for Kent State as they trailed 3-2 after Taylor's power play goal at 19:15 of the second. In the third it was the Davenport defense allowing just six shots on net while pouring in a pair of goals. Louie Abounader scored his fourth of the season at 1:11 of the third from Thompson and Travis White sealed it at 6:48 from Winston Hofer. Clayton Brown improved to 7-2 this season making 17 saves. Sky Buller made 41 saves for KSU.

In Saturday's tilt the netminder was Matt Kaludis for the Panthers and he stopped 18-of-19 shots to improve to 13-1 between the pipes for Davenport. Buller made 37 saves for Kent State in the loss. Thompson scored the team's first goal again his seventh of the season at 5:51 of the first period on the power play from Cameron Dimmitt and White. The Golden Flashes tied it up on Taylor's goal just 24 seconds later from Chad Parise.

White scored the game-winning goal at 12:42 of the second period to tie for the team lead with 11. It was assisted by Alex Hulford and Eckler. Dimmitt took care of the rest beating Buller twice in the second (16:25) and third (8:09) running his season total to 10 goals. Abounader and Aurand helped on the first goal by Dimmitt and Tyler Ploeg recorded his fourth assist of the season on the second goal.
