Defense Dominant in 20-7 Win at Saint Xavier

Panthers win for the third straight game improving to 4-2

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Davenport football team extended their win streak to three on Saturday afternoon with a road win at Saint Xavier by the score of 20-7. The win was likely the most impressive to date against an established opponent. The Cougars were limited to 242 total yards and converted just 1-of-12 on third down against the stout Panther defense which has limited their opponent to just seven points a game in their last three wins.

The game was a defensive battle throughout the first half and Davenport eventually cracked the scoreboard first with 3:44 left in the second quarter. The Panthers drove 71 yards in five plays with Hunter Krause throwing to Herman Brunis for a 62-yard gain down to the SXU 6. Krause kept around right end for a two-yard score and the PAT was blocked for a 6-0 lead.

Saint Xavier then drove the field themselves and the DU defense tightened to force a field goal attempt from 22 yards. The kick was faked however and Anthony Murray made a great open-field tackle to stop the Cougars at the four-yard line.

The defense set up the offense with great field position on the SXU first drive of the third quarter. Dan Ladd was hit by T.J. Douglas after a catch and coughed up the ball which was recovered by Deion Powers at the SXU 16. Krause then connected with Nate Couturier on a 16-yard strike to gain a 13-0 lead with 10:53 left in the third.

SXU missed a 31-yard field goal on their next drive but got it right back after a three-and-out by Davenport. The Cougars marched 50 yards in four plays and quarterback John Rhode found Ladd for a 10-yard score with 4:50 left in the third making it 13-7.

The Cougars took over the ball at the end of the third and into the fourth when Douglas again made a great play with an interception at the DU 43 which was returned 20 yards to the SXU 37. That turnover set up the final Davenport touchdown. The Panthers went those 37 yards in seven plays as Krause tossed his second TD of the game, this time to Herman Brunis, on a 19-yard connection for a 20-7 lead with 9:32 to play.

Davenport recovered the ensuing kickoff around mid-field and took 1:46 off the clock. SXU was sacked on third down by Jon Simmons and Patrick McMahon at the DU 46 and then turned it over on downs with a dropped pass by Stephen Simms.

The Cougars had one more drive with 4:14 left but could not get out of their own territory. Douglas finished with six tackles and two pass breakups. Brent Showers led the defense with 12 tackles and three for loss. Simmons had a season-high eight tackles and two sacks for a loss of 12 yards.

Brunis went over 100 yards receiving for the second time this season catching six passes for 111 yards. Krause finished 15-of-22 for 187 yards and a pair of TD passes.
