GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 24
th ranked Panthers looked to continue their historic start to the 2016 season while hosting the Cardinals of Concordia University. Davenport didn't miss a beat today as they won their 12
th straight game and stay undefeated on the season. The Panthers battled the elements today as the game was delayed multiple times due to lightning strikes near the stadium.
The Cardinals would put up a tough fight against the Panthers as they held DU scoreless for the first 69 minutes. Davenport would only stat six shots during the first half as the weather and the Cardinals would create difficulties for the DU offense. The Panthers proved that they are resilient as they wouldn't let the weather affect them. Davenport would stick to their strategy and attack heavily on the offensive side of the ball. Freshman
Roheema Bennett provided the game winning goal in the 70
th minute of play on an unassisted goal. The defense miss played the ball and Bennett swooped in and knocked the ball into the net with her left foot.
Due to the lightning strikes near the stadium, the game would be called off during the 72
nd minute of action. According to the NAIA rules, if a soccer game is played for 70 or more minutes and is called off due to weather then the game will count as a full game. This is the second time a thunder storm has stopped play for the women's soccer team this season.
Davenport would set the record tonight for the longest streak without losing a game in program history. The Panthers have gone 14 games without losing and are extremely close to setting the longest win streak in program history. Keep following the Panthers during this historic run as they take on Madonna University on Saturday, 4 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
