Panthers Stumble in Fourth Quarter of 24-20 Loss to Saint Joseph's

DU (5-4) led 20-10 early in the fourth before the Pumas scored the final 14 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The first game under the lights at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex for the football team at Davenport University had a dim ending as visiting Saint Joseph's scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for a 24-20 win. Davenport (6-4) seemed to have the game in hand early in the fourth quarter after a Patrick Gregory 32-yard field goal with 13:54 to play giving DU a 20-10 lead. The defense got a stop after a seven-play drive by the Pumas which gave DU the ball at their own 25. The Panthers moved just five yards in a three-and-out and Saint Joseph's got the ball at the SJC 35 with 8:56 left.

The Pumas went to the aerial attack as Phillip Kimble hit Tremel Glasper for 47 yards to the DU 18. Two plays later it was Glasper on a stop-and-go route to the back pylon for a 19-yard touchdown with 7:43 remaining and a 20-17 deficit. The offense went backwards three yards in three plays on the next drive and special teams made a play for SJC as Richard Hughes blocked the punt and the Pumas took over at the DU 23 with 6:02 left. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the DU 7 and on second-and-goal from the eight it was Kimble dropping back to pass and then running up the middle and diving into the end zone for the winning score with 4:31 to play.

Davenport was forced to punt after a sack on Hunter Krause resulting in fourth-and-22 as Gregory punted the ball to the SJC 33 with 2:21 to go. Facing and third-and-10 after Davenport called two timeouts, Derrick Hallman broke a few tackles and gained 12 yards on the ground for a first down that sealed the win for the NCAA Division II member. The fourth quarter saw Davenport gain just 12 yards and go 0-for-4 on third down. The Pumas gained 104 yards, all through the air, in the fourth quarter and went 1-for-3 on third down.

Gregory gave Davenport a 3-0 lead at 6:05 of the opening quarter on a 28-yard field goal, giving him his second multi-field goal game of the season and making him 6-for-10 this season. Saint Joseph's took a 7-3 lead at 1:09 of the first quarter as Hallman scored on a one-yard run capping off a 10-play, 70-yard drive lasting 4:56. William Gist had a strong game on the ground going over 100 yards for the third straight game with 17 carries for 104 yards. He gave DU a 10-7 lead with a two-yard scamper with 11:06 left in the second quarter.

Keion Powers took a short pass and then turned it upfield for a 37-yard score with 6:38 left in the second quarter for a 17-7 lead heading into halftime. Marcin Gawlak booted a 42-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17-10 with 5:08 left in the third quarter for SJC. The Pumas gained 255 yards on the night while the Panthers had 299 yards including 157 on the ground. The one glaring stat which Davenport had controlled all year was penalties which resulted in 105 yards on eight infractions. The defense for Davenport was led in tackles by Brian Williams with seven including a 12-yard sack. The defense recorded 10 tackles for loss and Deion Powers recorded an interception. The defense now has 14 interceptions this season and given up just seven touchdown passes. The Panthers will host Saint Francis (Ind.) currently 8-1 and ranked fourth in the NAIA next Saturday at noon (Nov. 5) in the season finale.
