DEARBORN, Mich. – The Panthers fell short in their come back tonight against a feisty UM-Dearborn team. The Wolverines, coached by former DU coach Taylor Langley, wanted this win extremely bad and proved that tonight. Davenport played well down the stretch and had a miraculous come back. However an interesting foul call at the end of the game gave the Wolverines a couple free throws to seal the deal.
From the opening tip-off the Wolverines gym was electric with energy, a crowd of near 300 people came to watch the Panthers take on the Wolverines. Both teams battled back and forth for the first couple minutes, trading some buckets up until the five-minute mark. Dearborn took the lead with 14:56 in the first half and held that lead throughout the rest of the half. Davenport wasn't able to string baskets together in the half as it seemed like the Wolverines had all the answers on defense. The Panthers were held to only 26 points in the half.
The Wolverines started off the second half with some pep in their step as they increased their lead to 15 with 18:19 remaining in the half. The Panthers would slowly chip at that lead for the rest of the half. Senior
Kevin Rich had himself one heck of a second half as he scored 16 points on 5/7 shooting from the field. The score was 61-52 with 4:14 remaining and the Panthers had a tall hill to climb ahead of them.
Robbie Bramhill rattled home a three pointer with 4:00 remaining in the half to cut the lead to six. The Wolverines came back and increased the lead to ten points with 2:14 on the clock. Rich would hit three trey balls in the last two minutes to help give the Panthers a chance to tie it up.
With nine seconds remaining in regulation
Nick Gamble had the ball in his hands and drove to his left. He took some contact and put up a lay-up with his left hand while an opposing Wolverine was contesting the shot. Gamble connected and tied the game at 71-71, time would run out and the game went into over time.
Dearborn won the tip and hit a three ball to open up the over time period. Gamble came back and responded with a three of his own to tie the game 74-74. With 2:25 remaining in the overtime period neither team would score a field goal the rest of the game. The Panthers had a chance for the victory. Gamble missed a pull-up jump shot from 17 feet with three seconds remaining in the game. The ball bounced off the front of the rim and the Wolverines would secure the rebound. Shortly after the refs would call a reach in foul on the Panthers to grant the Wolverines two free throw shots with .9 seconds remaining. Jason Penn knocked in the first of two free throws to claim the victory.
Rich was outstanding for Davenport, he hit multiple three pointers to help send the game into over time during the last two minutes of the second half. He led DU with 23 points, had eight rebounds and shot 8/14 from the field.
