GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a rematch of last year's NAIA National Championship Opening Round, Davenport men's soccer defeated Purdue-Northwest for the second straight time in the postseason to advance to the round of 16 with a 3-1 victory on another snowy afternoon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers (18-2-2) will now hit the road to Delray Beach, Florida which is the final site to battle either Baker (Kan.) or Midland (Neb.) on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Sophomores
Brogan Shrimpton and
Tyler Collishaw teamed up for a pair of goals and
Jordan Van Oostenbrugge came off the bench for the team's third goal on a terrible weather day including high winds and blowing snow throughout most of the match. The Panthers got on the board at 9:37 as Collishaw had a free kick about 25 yards out on the right wing. He lifted a beautiful pass to the left post and Shrimpton came running up and headed it home for his seventh of the season.
The possession by Davenport was the story for the rest of the first half as they could not break past the Purdue-Northwest defense who were playing with the wind. Davenport had three shots but just one on goal while the Pride had just one shot which was not on goal.
The Pride scored the equalizer at 66:11 as a hand ball resulted in a free kick by Chris Rassel who drilled a ball from 25 yards to the lower right just past a diving
Aaron Orban in goal. Rassel's first goal of the season seemed to spark the Panthers as they forced the issue for the rest of the match. Shrimpton gave Davenport a 2-1 lead at 75:40 as Collishaw again took a free kick from 30 yards which was saved initially but the rebound came right to Shrimpton who buried it. The insurance goal came at 82:02 as Van Oostenbrugge dribbled a short distance and fired lower left from 18 yards for his second of the season.
"I couldn't be more proud of the boys today despite the terrible weather conditions," commented head coach
Chris Hughes. "Ultimately they persevered and found a way to beat a good Purdue-Northwest team and now head to our third consecutive round of 16 next week."
The Davenport defense allowed just one shot on goal and three total. Davenport finished with 12 shots including five on goal.
