Panthers Sweep Oakland In Two Games Series

Davenport out scores the Grizzlies 13-4

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's division one hockey team takes care of Oakland in two game series and improves to an impressive 10-0. Both the men's division one and division two teams are a perfect 10-0 on the season. The men's division one team will have another big challenge coming up as they travel to Adrian College on Thursday. The last time these two teams met it was the national game of the week and the Panthers walked away victorious 5-4.

Game 1 (Friday, November 4th)
Final Score: Davenport 6, Oakland 4
Location: Rochester, Mich.
Records: Davenport 9-0, Oakland 2-8

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Panthers were coming off an impressive 5-4 win over Adrian College and needed to match that same effort against the Grizzlies. They answered the call and scored the first four goals of the game. Tyler Ploeg notched the opening goal on a solo effort.
-Davenport Dominated the first two periods as they scored the only three goals in the opening 40 minutes of play. Jordan Simmonds was the only one to score in the second period.
-The third period saw the Grizzlies fight back and put the Panthers on their heels. Oakland would score four goals in the period to make it a close game down the stretch. Simmonds would score his second goal of the game in the third period to give Davenport a three goal lead.
-Simmonds led all scorers with two goals.
-Alyx Fonseca tallied two assists to lead DU.


Game 2 (Saturday, November 5th)
Final Score: Davenport 7, Oakland 1
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 10-0, Oakland 2-9

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Panthers made sure that the Grizzlies knew the 6-4 game the previous night was a fluke and sent the Grizzlies packing with a 7-1 loss. Davenport was all over Oakland during the second game of the series as they tallied 50 shots on goal compared to the Grizzlies 21. Jordan Simmonds is a monster and proved his offensive potency during this game, he scored the opening goal of the game in the 4th minute of play. Davenport would tack on one more goal to lead 2-0 after the first period.
-Everett Thompson provided a couple of goals in the second period to increase the Panthers lead to 5-0. Kody Polin was all over the place in the first 40 minutes of play, he assisted or scored on four of the five goals scored.
-Oakland would get their first goal of the game at the start of the third period. Douglas Andrews scored in the 6th minute of play. Simmonds would respond with a goal of his less than two minutes later.
-Simmonds, Polin, and Thompson all scored two goals each.
-Simmonds led DU with three assists.
-Jason Rhynold played all 60 minutes in the net for DU and stopped 20 of the 21 shots sent his way.

 
UP NEXT
The Panthers have a giant test this week as they travel to Adrian College on Thursday at 7 p.m.. The last time these two teams played Davenport won 5-4 in the national game of the week. Expect nothing less than a heated battle from start to finish between these two teams.
