GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's Division II hockey team gave the senior class a great send-off on Friday night with a 4-3 win over Grand Valley State. The matchup between two of the top teams in the Central Region did not disappoint. The Lakers ranked second and the Panthers ranked third in the region entering play had a see-saw game trading goals until the third period. The Lakers fell to 26-5-1 overall while the Panthers improved to 20-8. The two teams will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Georgetown Ice Arena.
Collin Finkhouse opened the scoring at 11:12 of the first period unassisted.
Kyle McConnell tied the game 2:14 later on his 10th goal of the season from
Donald Sund. The Lakers took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Anthony Russo scored at the 14:58 mark from Michael Bishop.
Jake Otto started the second period scoring at 11:09 for his 11th goal assisted by
Branden Burton and Alex Stewart. GVSU answered again making it 3-2 at the 15:32 mark as Ian Hamilton got the goal and assists went to Russo and Bishop. Zac Bodziak scored his team-leading 25th goal at 17:49 from
Chris McRae to tie it 3-3 after two periods in the books.
The pivotal moment of the contest came 6:16 into the third period as Alex Ostrowski got a five-minute major for contact to the head. To make it worse for GVSU, Hamilton was whistled for interference 22 seconds later giving the Panthers a 5-on-3 power play. Davenport took advantage with the game-winning goal scored at 7:15 by
Daniel Swink, his 11th of the season, from Burton.
Devin Rosema got his first win in net making 35 saves including 14 in the final period.
