GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The frontcourt for Davenport University had a big night in the team's 91-66 WHAC Quarterfinal win over Siena Heights on Thursday. Senior
Dominez Burnett scored 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting marking his third straight game with 30 or more. He now needs 40 points to take over the career scoring record in WHAC and Michigan collegiate history. Junior
John McCloud scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in 28 minutes.
The Panthers led from start to finish improving to 27-4 overall and will play Aquinas in the WHAC semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the DU Student Center. The two teams split the regular season series with the road team winning each game. The Panthers led for 38:21 of game time and owned the inside outscoring the Saints, 52-22, in the paint. McCloud scored the first six points for Davenport for a quick 6-0 lead. Burnett scored his first points at the 14:15 mark and then
Jason Jordan and
Braima Hai followed with baskets for a 14-5 lead at the 13:12 mark. It was Hai's first points since being injured at Siena Heights on Jan. 20.
The lead reached double digits for the first time at 23-13 with 7:47 left in the half after
Andia Marsh's free throws. The lead grew to 32-16 after a fast-break layup by Burnett and SHU called a timeout with 5:57 left in the opening half. DU led 44-24 at the break and outscored the Saints bench 17-2. The Panthers did not let up in the second half and led by at least 20 points for the final 18 minutes of the game. Their largest lead ballooned to 87-54 with 5:11 remaining after a corner triple by Marsh. DU scored 30 of their 47 second-half points in the paint.
Davenport shot 61 percent (36-of-59) from the floor marking their second-best shooting performance of the season. They shot 62.1 percent in the season opener against Grace Bible.
Nick Gamble scored eight points and also had five assists and four steals in 17 minutes. Jordan scored nine points in 10 minutes off the bench. Marsh finished with eight points making both of his three-point attempts. DU outrebounded SHU, 32-28, and had 15 second-chance points. Jerrell Martin was the only Siena Heights player in double figures with 11 points and they shot 42.9 percent. The Saints were hurt by 21 turnovers.
