After an up-and-down fall season, the Davenport Men's Rugby squad looks to open up their regular season and Spring Break road trip with a non-conference game versus a familiar foe, Arkansas State University. The Red Wolves got the best of the Panthers this past fall in a very one sided match, winning 45-7. The Panthers are looking to rebound after a fall season that they used to gauge where they were at; getting playing time for the younger, more inexperienced guys and trying new lineups to really get a solid rotation set for this tough spring schedule in the D1A Mid-South Conference.
"We had our fair share of off moments, but that's what the fall is for in our minds," said head coach
James Wood. "It's the time to move people around, and try some things with the bench that, if [the game] counted, you might not normally do."
The Panthers are going to be relying on returning experience to lead them through these tough games ahead. "Connor Schilling,
Carl Smith,
Thomas Cheslek, and
Brady Gent have been consistent bright spots for us this fall," said Wood. "I expect those guys to show up again on Saturday."
There will be no live stream of the game, but you can follow along on Twitter (@davenport_rugby) for updates throughout the game.
