Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey (DII) |

Stewart Nets Overtime Winner over Michigan

Davenport improved to 21-9 overall

CHICAGO, Ill. - The men's Division II hockey team built a three-goal lead in the first period on Saturday at ACHA DII Regionals and then needed overtime before winning 5-4 over Michigan at West Meadows Ice Arena.

Davenport (21-9) is the third-seed in the regionals as the top two seeds have already received a berth into nationals in March. The Panthers need two wins to punch their ticket and it looked early like they would cruise to one of those wins against the Wolverines. Donald Sund scored twice and Brandon Bihn sandwiched a goal between Sund's goals for a 3-0 lead in the first 16:11 of the contest. Tyler Thomas assisted on Bihn's goal at 4:46 and Jessee Game assisted on Sund's power play goal at 16:11.

Michigan got on the board with a power play goal by Jack Blumberg at 18:48 of the first from Wesley Cimmarrus. Blumberg had a busy afternoon in the penalty box serving 10 of his team's 14 minutes. Matt Taylor cut the lead down to 3-2 at 4:44 of the second from Nick Daigneau.

Branden Burton responded 35 seconds later to give Davenport a 4-2 lead with assists by Sund and Jake Otto. Owen Helber scored at 17:07 of the second from Taylor and Kyle Slovis and then the Wolverines tied it at 18:58 as Taylor's second goal was assisted by Daigneau.

After a scoreless third period, DU scored the winning goal 51 seconds into overtime as Alex Stewart scored his fourth goal of the season and first game-winning goal with assists from Zac Bodziak and Chris McRae. Zac Smith (8-1) got the win for Davenport between the pipes with 23 saves. Davenport will play Michigan State on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. with a trip to nationals on the line.
