SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Panthers trailed to Lourdes University 23-20 at the break Saturday after the Gray Wolves held DU to a season-low 20 points while the Panthers shot 33.3% from the field in the first half. DU then bounced back with a 26-point third quarter led by
Alex Law who scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half as the Panthers ran away with a 66-40 victory. The Panthers earned their 20
th win for the 12
th straight season behind 58.8% shooting from the field in the second half as DU now stands at 20-5, 16-2 on the season.
The Gray Wolves were able to take a 23-20 lead to halftime after they held DU to eight points in the first quarter.
Mallory Sewell led the Panthers in the first half with seven points while
Molly Babbs totaled five points and five rebounds. DU was not able to find a rhythm offensively as they went 7-for-21 from the field including 1-for-9 from behind the arc.
The Panthers would bounce back in the second half as their offensive came alive. DU opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run that would give DU the lead for the remainder of the game. The Panthers heated up from three-point range as Law (2-for-5) and
Lauren Brower (2-for-2) each hit a pair. The DU offense would catch fire with a 20-for-34 performance in the second half (58.8%) to allow the Panthers to carry their lead to as many as 26 points.
Amanda Merz aided the Panther offense with a nine points, five rebounds and four assists. DU scored 26 points in the third quarter and 20 points in the fourth quarter behind their balanced offense that saw nine Panthers score. Babbs went on to finish with eight points and six rebounds and Sewell totaled nine points.
The DU defense held Lourdes to shooting just 26.8% for the game (15-for-56) and forced 19 turnovers. The Panthers controlled the game on the glass (42-28) while they outscored the Gray Wolves 45-12 in the paint.The Panthers will see their next matchup against Lawrence Tech (19-2, 16-2) on February 10 in a battle of the top two team in the WHAC.
