No. 9 Panthers Outlast No.18 Lawrence Tech for Top Place in WHAC

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Senior guard Alex Law led the Panthers Wednesday night in a game against the No. 18 Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Law would prove to be the difference in the first half as she led all scorers at the break with 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. The Panthers would have to fight off a relentless Blue Devil comeback attempt in the second half as LTU would cut the lead to just one-point with 13.5 seconds remaining in the game.

The Panthers jumped out to a 36-27 halftime lead behind the play of Law as she led all scorers at the break. DU would use its three-point shot to carry its nine-point lead on a team effort of 6-for-14 shooting from behind the arc.

The second half saw DU extend its lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter as Amanda Merz and Momo Neal helped fuel the Panther offense. Merz totaled 10 of her 12 points in the second half while Neal came off of the bench to secure eight points and four steals for DU.

The Panthers would then see the Blue Devils look to fight back into the game as Hali Butler came alive for LTU with 19 points in the second half as a part of her 28-point performance. The Panthers led 71-60 with 1:40 remaining, but LTU would outscore DU 17-5 over the next 1:26 of the game as they cut the Panther lead to just one point, 77-76. DU would come up big in the end as Merz made the game-sealing steal with 11 seconds left in the game and the Panthers up three-points after Law broke up an inbounds attempt by LTU and Merz picked up the loose ball. Alex Law would secure the final free throws for the Panthers as they extended their lead to five points, 81-76, and locked down the victory.

Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells commented on her team's composure down the stretch, "I'm very proud of our team. They showed so much toughness in practice the last two days in preparing for this game. They had the right mentality coming into tonight. We had some opportunities to pull away from Lawrence Tech, but they wouldn't go away and our girls remained tough and confident during those runs."

The Panthers win advanced them to 21-5 on the season and 17-2 in the WHAC. They secured their lone spot at the top of the WHAC standings as they knocked LTU to one game back in the standings at a 16-3 record and tied the season series with the Blue Devils.

"Law was big for us in the 4th quarter knocking down free throws. And Merz gave such a gutsy effort all game, but especially after she went down on that flagrant foul. I could point out something good each one of our players gave us tonight. It was a complete team effort. We'll enjoy this win tonight but then it's on to the next one. Our most important game is the next one coming up at Aquinas", said Scherr-Wells
