Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey (DI) |

DU wins GLCHL title with 4-3 overtime win over WMU

Cameron Dimmitt scored with 1.8 seconds left in OT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It looked like Saturday night's Senior Night contest was heading into a shootout, but Cameron Dimmitt did not want that situation as he scored with 1.8 seconds left in overtime for a 4-3 win over Western Michigan. The win was the 19th in a row for the hottest team in ACHA Division I and propelled them to the GLCHL regular season championship.

"I am very proud of my guys," said head coach Phil Sweeney. "They always battle until the very end. Everyone in the building thought that game was going to a shoot out, except Hofer and Dimmitt. Winston made a great play to chip the puck ahead to Dimmitt who continued to work. As he went into the zone he let a great shot go and it found a hole. Our whole team went crazy and it was a great way to close our home schedule for the fans but also for our seniors. After a rough game on Friday, our guys responded well on Saturday. Again I am very proud for how hard our guys work, and also that we won a Conference Championship this weekend!"

It appeared that the Panthers were going to cruise towards the title as they built a 3-0 lead after two periods. Everett Thompson scored at 7:04 of the first from Tyler Ploeg and Chris Eckler. Eckler then scored 30 seconds later on the power play from Jordan Simmonds and Cody Walsh. The Panthers took a three-goal lead at 4:10 of the second period as Dimmitt scored on the power play from Walsh and Simmonds.

The Stallions did not give up and came back to score three times in the third period to force overtime. Zach Mudge scored the first goal and assisted on the other two. Cole Kapovich and Jesse Cameron also put one past Matt Kaludis. Both teams played high-octane offense in overtime and then Dimmitt whizzed one past Brandon Haase for the improbable finish. WMU had 37 shots on goal as Kaludis made 34 stops. Haase stopped 40 shots for the Stallions.
