Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Ellis Nets Two in 3-2 Win at GVSU

DU beats #4 Lakers for 10th victory

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. - The women's hockey team picked up their biggest win of the season on Sunday with a 3-2 decision over No. 4 Grand Valley State. The Panthers split the weekend series with the Lakers moving to 10-14-1 overall. Grand Valley State lost for the seventh time this season (17 wins).

Emily Ellis, a newcomer to the team at semester break, scored a pair of goals for the Panthers. She got things going at 1:21 of the second period from Caitlin Dunne for a 1-0 lead. Stacey Mathieu evened the game for GVSU at 11:14 and then Ellis' power play goal at 3:42 of the third period regained the lead. Dunne teamed up on the assist with Ellis.

Katie Dubro picked a great time for her first goal of the season and it proved to be the game-winner at 11:27 from Megan Martin and Adrienne Porcalla. Corey Robison answered to get within a goal at 13:04 from Allison Lowe and Bree Tasker. Davenport then held on despite constant pressure from the Lakers. Karley Ferguson made 46 saves for the Panthers and earned her fifth win in net.

"This was such a huge game for this team and our season," said head coach Tom Hofman. "Playing good teams down the stretch has really made us focus on the little things. We focused on our forecheck today, trying to create turnovers. Emily's first goal came directly off of a terrific forecheck. We also got one on the power play, something we've been struggling with. Karley was strong again in net for us. She came up big after they pulled their goalie and Grand Valley continued to press. There is not a better feeling than taking down a great team to earn your playoff spot. The girls have to be very proud."
