Panthers Earn Split at Southeastern

DU lost 14-8 in game one and rebounded for 6-5 win in game two

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Davenport baseball team earned a split on Tuesday at Southeastern as they lost 14-8 in game one and rebounded for a 6-5 win in game two. DU currently sits at 8-4 overall while Southeastern is 13-10.

The Fire jumped all over Davenport starter Corey Sessions in game one. Southeastern scored four times in the first inning, one more in the second and knocked Sessions out of the game in the four-run third inning. He lasted 2.1 innings and yielded eight hits and seven earned runs. Caleb Leach, Pete Zeimis and Krystian Johnson-Batillana all pitched in relief for the Panthers.

Zack Sardellitti, J.P. North and Brian Sobieski each had a double in the contest. Matt Priebe hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning as DU trimmed a 9-1 deficit to 9-5. The Fire responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 12-5. Mike D'Acunti had a two-RBI double in the inning.

Dre Celestijn delivered a RBI single to center scoring Nolan Page in the top of the seventh. Sobieski hit his double to left center for a pair of RBI scoring Celestijn and North for the seventh and eighth runs for DU. Angel Garced led the Fire with three hits including a double and homer with three runs and three RBI.

Southeastern led 5-3 after five innings in game two before the Panthers scored the last three runs. Sardellitti scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to get within 5-4. Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle had a clutch RBI single to tie the game in the seventh and on the single an error occurred which allowed the winning run to score.

Jonathan Cheshire pitched in the seventh and earned his fourth save. Tyler Bradner gave his team six solid innings to pick up his first win. He allowed four earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts. Dylan Jameson got the loss in relief for the Fire. Brandon Cable's double was the only extra-base hit for Davenport. Sobieski, Sardellitti and Priebe each had two hits in the nightcap.
