DU Takes Out Hope 17-4 For First Win of the Season

HOLLAND, Mich. - The DU women's lacrosse team earned their first victory of 2016 as they took out Hope College 17-4 to advance their record to 1-1.

Hope took the early 1-0 lead over DU with a goal at the 27:22 mark. The Panthers responded with the next four goals as they took over the lead, 4-1, with 12 minutes remaining in the first half and they did not look back. Brooke Knoll got the scoring going for the Panthers with a goal at the 25:43 mark on an assist from Hanna Bush. The Panthers rattled off the final five goals of the first half as Knoll would add to her scoring total, Bush found the back of the net, and Jessica Lemcke added a goal on a free position shot. DU would jump out to a 9-2 halftime lead as they outshot the Flying Dutch 20-to-7 in the first half.

The second half saw the Panthers add to their lead. Lemcke added three more goals in the second half while Knoll tallied a two more scores. The Panthers scored the first goal of the second half as Lemcke scored unassisted at 28:21 and opened up the game with four unanswered goals that gave DU a 14-3 lead with just under 21 minutes remaining in the game. Knoll would go on to record a game-high six goals while Lemcke totaled five goals. Bush totaled three goals and added five assists. DU outshot the Flying Dutch 33-to-14 led by Lemcke who recorded nine shots, including seven shots on goal.

The Panthers held a slight edge in turnover margin (13-12) with the DU defense causing 11 turnovers. Sydney Gray led the Panther defense with three caused turnovers while she also led DU with four ground balls. Samantha Powers (1-1) took the decision in goal for DU as she recorded three saves. Alex Yates replaced Powers at halftime and totaled four saves in 30 minutes of action.
