SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Panthers opened up play in the WHAC Wednesday evening with a road match up against Lourdes University. DU opened up a 15-1 halftime lead and controlled the second half on their way to a decisive 21-2 win. The victory over the Gray Wolves puts their 2016 overall record at 2-1 with a 1-0 mark in WHAC play.
The Panthers scored the first 10 goals of the game sparked by
Sara Kuzava who tallied a goal just 15 seconds into the game. DU would take the 10-0 lead with 14:25 left in the half before the Gray Wolves found the back of the net, but the Panthers responded with the final five goals of the half.
Brooke Knoll would lead the Panther attack with five goals for the half and
Hanna Bush would contribute with three goals and four assists before the break.
DU controlled Lourdes over the remaining 30 minutes of action as they totaled six more goals and allowed Lourdes to score just once. Knoll would go on to lead all scorers with five goals while Kuzava and
Jessica Lemcke each totaled four goals.
Mariah Newton helped the Panthers control the draw all game as she recorded a game-high 13. The DU defense caused eight Lourdes turnovers and DU recorded 16 ground balls for the game.
Tara Pluger led the DU defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Samantha Powers (2-1) earned the victory in goal for Davenport with two saves in 30 minutes of action.
Alex Yates replaced Powers at the break and recorded 4 saves in 30 minutes played.
