Stifling Defense Leads Davenport into NAIA Semifinals

The Panthers will be making their second straight semifinal appearance and third overall

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The Davenport men's basketball team has put on a defensive display through three games of the 2016 NAIA National Tournament and advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year and third time in program history with a 77-60 win over No. 10 Warner (Fla.) on Saturday night. The Panthers tied the school record for wins (32-4) in the quarterfinal victory over the Royals and are winning by an average of 14.7 points per game in the tournament. Davenport is allowing just 33.5 percent shooting in the tournament including 29.1 percent behind the arc. Davenport is also controlling the glass with a plus-5.7 edge in rebounding margin.

Junior Kevin Rich scored all 19 of his points in the second half connecting on five triples and also led the team with eight rebounds. Rich finished the game 7-of-12 from the floor including 5-of-10 from the arc. Senior Dominez Burnett scored 20 or more points for the eighth straight game finishing with 21 on 8-of-14 shooting. He also had four rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes. Senior Wayne Bradford was in double figures with 10 points and was 3-of-4 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the foul line. The Panthers shot 52.7 percent for the game (29-of-55) while Warner went 17-of-54 for 31.5 percent. The Royals shot 8-of-28 from the arc and were 18-of-25 at the line.

Warner started the game with the first five points and it was back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes. The game was tied 15-15 at the 10:30 mark after a pair of free throws by Burnett. The Royals scored five straight to take a 23-19 lead at the 5:55 mark and Davenport started to chip away at the lead and tied the game again at 27-27 on a three-point play by Jason Jordan. The Panthers led by a deuce, 32-30, at the break holding the Royals to 22.2 percent shooting (6-of-27).

DU started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 39-30 lead after a triple by Jordan. The advantage grew to double digits at 49-39 for the first time with 12:08 left in the game after a Burnett basket. The Panthers used a 1-3-1 zone to perfection for a large majority of the second half and increased their lead in the process. Rich caught fire in the second half and nailed one of his five triples to give DU a 55-40 lead with 10:32 remaining. The lead grew to 20 points on three different occasions in the second half before the 17-point final margin. The Panthers await the winner of Indiana Wesleyan/York, Neb. in the semifinals on Monday, March 14 at 9 p.m. eastern time.
