GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Panthers opened up at home for the first time in 2016 Friday afternoon as they hosted NCAA DII University of Findlay. DU opened up with a 3-1 win in game one before they came back in game two to take down the Oilers 4-3 in extra innings and earn the sweep.
The Panthers took the early 1-0 lead in the first game as
Aby Brambila scored while
Alyssa Eastman was caught in a rundown on a steal attempt. This would be the edge that starting pitcher
Emily Maves (9-3) needed as she shut the Oilers down with an 11-strikeout performance and a complete game in the circle. DU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning to take their lead to 3-0.
Eastman knocked a triple to right center that scored
McKenzie Rowe.
Lauren French then scored pinch runner
Sam Merren following a Findlay error to give DU a three-run lead heading into the seventh inning. The Oilers pushed a run across the plate in the top of the seventh but Maves closed the door by striking out the final batter as DU took the 3-1 win.
The Panthers then needed to battle back in game two to force extra innings. The Oilers took the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI single to center field. Findlay then grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth as a Panther error allowed an unearned run to score and DU found themselves in a two-run hole.
DU responded in their next at bat as they scored two runs to tie the game.
Carli SanMillan began the inning with a triple to right center field. An Oiler error allowed SanMilllan to score as DU cut the lead to one run. Following a Brambila single and an Eastman fly ball to center field, Rowe tied the game as she scored on an Oiler wild pitch.
The Panthers would find themselves down going into their final at bat, 3-2, before they would respond once again to tie the game.
Nicole Vitale reached second on an error by the center fielder and Merrern came in to pinch run. French pushed a ground ball to the right side of the infield that advanced Merren to third and
Haley Obetts tied the game with an RBI single.
DU secured their win in the bottom of the eighth as SanMillan got the inning going with a double to left center. A bunt single by Rowe allowed SanMillan to advance to third and Brambila intentionally walked to load the bases. Eastman came to the plate and hit a shot to the short stop that scored SanMillan and DU took the sweep with a 4-3 win.
Mallory Teunissen (7-2) took the win in the circle for DU with a complete game, three strike outs, and two earned runs allowed.
