GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers fought off the No. 3 Indiana Tech Warriors early and late as DU secured its fifth conference win of the season and advanced its 2016 overall record to 6-1.
After allowing the first two goals of the game, junior attacker
Brooke Knoll ignited the DU offense. Knoll tallied the first two scores for the Panthers and
Tara Pluger added a score as DU fought to a 3-3 tie. The teams would continue to battle back and forth early on as the Warriors took a 4-3 lead before Knoll scored her third of the game from
Hanna Bush.
DU would open up the game from this moment as they tallied six unanswered goals to take a 10-4 lead with just under 26 minutes remaining in the game. Knoll would up her scoring total to a game-high six goals.
Jessica Lemcke added two goals and Pluger upped her scoring total to three goals. The Panthers would jump out to a 12-6 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game before Indiana Tech would look to make its comeback. Bush would help fuel this offensive surge from DU as she went on to record six assists for the game.
The Warriors would stage a comeback attempt as they tallied four unanswered goals to cut the DU lead to 12-9 with four minutes left in the game. After play was halted for 45 minutes due to weather, the Panthers closed the door as they secured the victory and advanced the record in WHAC play to 5-0.
The DU defense played stout all game long as they caused 14 turnovers and recorded 40 ground balls. Pluger recorded seven ground balls to lead DU while
Sydney Gray,
Mariah Newton and
Hannah Maroe each tallied four. Gray would also total six caused turnovers and Maroe added four.
Samantha Powers (6-1) earned the victory in goal for DU with nine saves.
