DU Sweeps Cornerstone in WHAC Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – DU opened up play in the WHAC Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Cornerstone University. The Panthers dominated the Golden Eagles on their way to a convincing sweep as the earned a pair of victories by 13-1 and 15-3 final scores.

DU opened up game one with a big six-run first inning. Carli SanMillan sparked the offense with a leadoff home run and Sarah Schneidenbach knocked a three-run triple as DU took command of the game early. The Panthers would add six more runs in the sixth inning as they ended the game 13-1 in six innings. Nicole Vitale highlighted the sixth inning surge from the Panthers with a two-run home run that scored Sarah Wallick.

The DU offense compiled 10 hits with nine different Panthers recording a hit. Alyssa Koziol made her return to the Panther lineup to total a 2-for-4 game with three RBI and one run scored. Emily Maves (12-3) earned the victory in the circle for the Panthers with a complete game performance and eight strikeouts.

Game two saw the Panther offense remain hot as they went on to total 15 runs on 19 hits. The top of the order fueled the DU attack as the top four hitters of the lineup combined for 11 this led by SanMillan's 4-for-5 game. The Panthers allowed the first run of the game, but responded to take over the lead on a Vitale two-run home run in the second inning. The Panthers added three runs in the third inning and capped their season-best offensive performance with a five-run seventh inning. McKenzie Rowe started the inning with an RBI double and Alyssa Eastman capped the offensive onslaught with her 10th home run of the season on a two-run shot.

Rowe would go on to have a 3-for-5 game with three RBI and two runs scored. Aby Brambila totaled a 2-for-5 game at the plate and Eastman finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Mallory Teunissen (9-3) recorded the victory in the circle for DU with a complete game and eight strikeouts.
