Davenport Rallies for 10-8 win at Spring Arbor

DU was down 5-0 after two innings and scored nine straight

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 19 Davenport baseball team fought back from an early deficit for a 10-8 non-conference win at Spring Arbor on Tuesday. The Cougars came out swinging with seven hits and five runs in the first two innings. DU starter Krystien Johnson-Batillana lasted just 1.1 innings and gave up six hits and all five runs. Brady Kais relieved Johnson-Batillana and managed to do a good job pitching into the ninth inning. His numbers were 7.1 innings pitched, seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Panthers began to chip away at their 5-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the third off Sam Memmelaar. Jeremy Vasquez had a single to start the inning and Brian Sobieski followed with his fifth home run of the season to left. Brandon Cable reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He later scored on a RBI groundout by Matt Priebe.

Davenport erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. Sobieski singled to start the inning and scored on Brandon Cable's third home run of the season to left center. Travis Bolin doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Priebe singled to left for a RBI to give DU a 6-5 lead. Nolan Page walked and then Drew Weston came on to pitch for Spring Arbor.

Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle walked to load the bases and Connor Seymour hit a grounder to Weston which moved everyone up a base. Nick Rangos then singled home a run for an 8-5 lead. Vasquez later on a squeeze bunt had a RBI plating the ninth run.

The Cougars scored in the bottom of the fifth on a Jeremiah Johnson solo home run. The Panthers added one more run in the top of the eighth. The first two batters were retired when Bolin tripled to right center. It was his eighth three-bagger of the season to tie the single-season school record set last year by Jordan Zylstra. Priebe collected his third RBI of the game on a single to center.

Spring Arbor made it very interesting in the bottom of the ninth with two runs. Kais was replaced by Alex Schuiling after a two-run double by Johnson. Jonathan Newman singled and put runners on the corners with the winning run at the plate. Jonathan Cheshire came on and fell behind in the count to Alex Holley but a ball in the dirt was smothered by Rangos behind the plate. Jacob Crum entered to courtesy run at first broke for second and was thrown out by Rangos to end the game and give Cheshire his ninth save. Kais got the win improving to 1-0 while Memmelaar took the loss and is now 1-3.
