GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – DU overcame a 3-1 deficit early in their WHAC Tournament Semifinal matchup Friday against Lourdes University to score 13 unanswered goals. DU outscored the Gray Wolves 10-0 in the second half as they ran away with a 14-3 win and advanced to the WHAC Tournament Championship game tomorrow (4/23) against Lawrence Tech at 1 p.m.
The Gray Wolves gave DU a battle early in the game as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The Panthers would then find their stride offensively with the final three goals of the first half to take a 4-3 halftime edge.
Amber Livingston led the late charge with a goal at 11:45.
Jessica Lemcke and
Sara Kuzava then each followed with a tally as the Panthers took their first lead of the game.
The Panthers would shut the Gray Wolves down in the second half led by their defense that held Lourdes two just two shots on goal in the second half.
Sydney Gray led the DU defense by causing eight turnovers and recording five ground balls. The Panthers controlled the draw control for the entire second half as Lemcke went on to lead DU with six.
Brooke Knoll fueled the Panther attack that tallied 10 scores in the second half as she notched three. Knoll recorded her 200
th career point on her second score of the game and becomes just the third Panther to hit the milestone.
Livingston would go on to tally two more scores and Kuzava added one more goal for the game. Senior
Emily DeVries scored her fifth goal of the season and freshman
Brianna Longnecker scored her first career goal from
Tara Pluger as the Panthers ran away with the game. Pluger and
Hanna Bush each went on to add to the Panther offense with three assists for the game.
Alex Yates (2-0) recorded the decision in goal with six saves and three goals against. The Panthers went on to outshoot the Gray Wolves 34-to-18 for the game with a 21-to-7 edge in the second half. The DU defense caused 21 turnovers and held Lourdes to just 12-for-22 on clears for the game.
