GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The NAIA Opening Round matchup between Davenport and No. 12 York (Neb.) was a pitcher's duel through the first five innings as neither team scored until the sixth. Each team scored a run in that inning and then York took a 2-1 lead with a run in the seventh. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the eighth, Davenport scored three times to pull off their first win against a top 25 team this season.
Corbin Clouse for Davenport and Corey Mixon for York traded zeros in the first five innings as Clouse had to labor a bit more by allowing four walks. Those walks and other long counts pushed his pitch count to 90 by the sixth inning. Clouse did strike out seven in his no-decision. York had back-to-back singles to start the sixth and Clouse was removed with one out and replaced by
Jonathan Cheshire. With two outs, York's Garrett Anctil and Nick Carney were hit by a pitch to give York a 1-0 lead.
Jeremy Vasquez was hit by a Mixon pitch to start the bottom of the sixth and bunted over by
Connor Seymour.
Zac Wilson bounced to second and moved Vasquez to third.
Travis Bolin then smoked a double down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1.
York saw
Bryan Saucedo enter the game for Davenport on the mound in the top of the seventh and worked back-to-back walks.
Corey Sessions replaced Saucedo and limited York to one run on a sacrifice fly by Jose Bueno to left scoring Lamar Smith.
Mixon continued to pitch well heading into the bottom of the eighth when he ran into trouble. Seymour singled through the right side with one out and then Mixon got Wilson to pop out to short. Bolin then singled up the middle and
Matt Priebe hit a clutch RBI single to right to tie it up at 2-2.
Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle followed with an infield single and Jaraad Salas replaced Mixon on the mound for York. He promptly hit
Brandon Cable to force in the winning run and
Brian Sobieski got plucked for an insurance run.
Sessions got the first two outs of the ninth before Bueno singled up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. He got Michael Johnson to finish 0-for-5 by inducing a fly-ball to Wilson along the right field line for the win. Sessions tossed three innings of three-hit ball with a walk and three strikeouts improving to 7-1. Mixon got the loss allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts falling to 11-3. The Panthers (42-15) will face No. 2 Bellevue (48-9) in tomorrow's 2 p.m. game after the Bruins beat Clarke 1-0 on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth.
