Panthers Fall 7-2 in NAIA Grand Rapids Bracket Final

Bellevue advances to NAIA World Series for first time since 2009

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team faced a formidable pitcher in Todd Nicks of Bellevue University on Friday afternoon in the final of the Grand Rapids Bracket. The junior from Bakersfield, California tossed his second gem of the tournament as the Bruins won 7-2 over the Panthers to advance to the NAIA World Series for the first time since 2009.

Nicks threw 115 pitches on Tuesday in a complete game 1-0 win over Clarke and on two days rest turned in eight-plus innings to improve to 11-1. Nicks allowed just three hits and at one point faced 21 straight batters without giving up a hit. Jeremy Vasquez had a single in the third inning when Davenport scored their two runs of the game and then Nicks didn't allow another hit until a Matt Priebe infield single in the ninth. Nicks left the game with runners on 1st and 2nd in the ninth and then Leland Tilley struck out the next two hitters and got a weak grounder back to the mound to finish the game.

Bryan Saucedo got the start for Davenport and lasted just two innings to take the loss (5-6). He allowed three hits and three earned runs with a strikeout. Jonathan Cheshire threw 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs in relief. Bellevue scored five of their runs in the first three innings and tacked on two more in the sixth.

Ross Feeley went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run for the Bruins. Trevor Jones, Derik Bontempo, Joe Mancuso and Matt Evans each had one RBI for Bellevue. Connor Seymour and Zac Wilson both had a RBI groundout for the Panthers. Davenport finishes the season at 43-17 overall.
