GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport University softball team took on the University of Michigan-Dearborn Friday evening in the winner's bracket of the WHAC Tournament. DU took control of the game early with a run in the first inning and junior pitcher
Emily Maves shut the Wolverines down from the circle as the Panthers took the 6-0 victory. The win advances the overall record for DU to 38-10 and places them in the WHAC Tournament Championship game on Monday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
The Panthers scored quickly as
Alyssa Koziol doubled to left center and
Lindsay Tasma followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Koziol and DU led 1-0. The Panthers expanded their lead to 4-0 in the fifth as
Lauren French hit a two-out, two-RBI single with that bases loaded that drove in Koziol and
Carli SanMillan. This early offensive surge allowed Maves (21-4) to lock the game down from the circle as she tossed her seventh shutout of the season in her complete-game, seven strikeout performance that allowed the Panthers to advance to the WHAC Tournament Championship.
The Panthers would score a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to complete the season sweep of the Wolverines. SanMillan recorded a 2-for-4 game from plate with an RBI and a run scored. Koziol went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and
Nicole Vitale finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
