GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The success continues for the Panthers as they increased their win streak to eight, and shutout their opponent for the eighth time this season. Davenport dominated possession of the ball and recorded 23 shots, while Cornerstone only had six. The Panthers are now 9-0-1 and 2-0 in conference play.
The first half saw the most success for the Panthers as they scored two goals on ten shots.
Shameeka Fishley notched the first goal of the game on a beautiful solo effort. She stormed the defender, stole the soccer ball, turned around and fired a hard shot from about 22 yards out over the keepers finger tips. This was Fishley's eighth goal of the season. Fishley leads the team in goals, shots, shots on goal, points and game winning goals thus far. The second goal came from a well-executed free kick.
Juli Knapp sent a gorgeous ball into the box, it went untouched and bounced over the keepers head.
Roheema Bennett took advantage of this opportunity and got her head on the ball to help it into the net. Bennett has now scored four goals this season, which is tied for third best on the team.
The second half was one of many opportunities. Davenport would register 13 shots, while only giving up two shots to Cornerstone. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not connect on any shots in the second half. The Panthers were constantly pressuring the Golden Eagles and did a great job of working together to create scoring opportunities.
Coach Allen had some thoughts after the game, "It was a great result tonight against a huge rival in Cornerstone. We were happy to score a couple great goals, and shutout the opponent while doing so. Having an all around performance like we did tonight is exactly the consistency we have been looking for. Fishley scored a cracking goal to get us started, and then Bennett added another one shortly after. The entire team was superb tonight, and executed many things that we talked about before the game. The back line and keepers have been increasingly solid, and the midfield took their game to another level tonight. Up top we have so many quality options and everyone is working extremely hard in practice to keep this team heading in the right direction. We have the ultimate test on Saturday, as we host Northwestern Ohio, who is another huge rival for us".
The Panthers will face UNOH this Saturday, 4 p.m. kickoff, at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Racers are currently ranked #5 in the country and hold a record of 7-1-1.
