Panthers Defeat Aquinas for 22nd Straight Time

Davenport (18-2, 12-0) did damage at the free throw line going 18-of-20

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The sixth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team continued their unbeaten Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate on Saturday with a 71-63 road win at Aquinas College. DU improved to 18-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference while also beating their inter-city rival for the 22nd straight time.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
90 percent – The Panthers shot 90 percent at the free throw line (18-of-20) for the second best percentage this season. Their best was going 7-of-7 in the first meeting this season against Aquinas

10 points, 12 rebounds – Senior Molly Babbs recorded her second straight double-double (third this season) going 5-of-6 from the floor. Babbs also had two assists and two steals in 27 minutes

50 percent – After shooting just 29.7 percent in the first half, Davenport made 15-of-30 from the floor in the final 20 minutes against the Saints

9 – Nine different Panthers made a field goal in the contest as Babbs and Chri Carter each led the team with 12 points

HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport and Aquinas went back and forth in the first quarter with two ties and two lead changes. The Panthers led 18-15 after one quarter with eight points coming off the bench. Aquinas built a four-point lead at 25-21 at the 6:18 mark of the second quarter and held that lead until DU regained it with 4:36 left in the quarter at 29-28.

That lead by Davenport would then be held for the remainder of the contest. The Panthers led by just one at the break but scored the first six points of the second half. Emily Severn hit a layup followed by a Chri Carter basket and then a pair of free throws by Severn.

The Saints got within one possession once in the third quarter but the Panthers held them off going up 49-42 after the third. Davenport scored 12 of their points in the paint in the third.

The lead grew to double figures within the first minute of the fourth and the Panthers led by as many as 13 points twice in the final quarter before winning 71-63. Davenport led for 30:12 of the 40 minutes in the game and outscored the Aquinas bench 29-8.
