CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's rugby team had their three-match winning streak ended by Notre Dame on Thursday under the lights at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers were 4-1 entering the contest and showing signs of a turnaround from last year's disappointing season. The match started off well for the Panthers as
Brady Erlich completed the first try with the conversion no good. The Fighting Irish came right back and tied it up at 5 but also missed on the conversion. Erlich reached the promised land for the second time and gave DU a 10-5 lead. Notre Dame took a 12-10 lead before halftime with a try and conversion.
The Panthers regained the lead after the break as
Drew Boatright reached the try line and
Noah Zomberg completed the conversion for a 17-12 lead. Notre Dame tied it again at 17 and then converted seven more points for a 24-17 lead.
Zaire Gray and a conversion by Erlich gave us another tie at 24. The Fighting Irish made the right plays over the final minutes and scored the last 14 points to secure a 38-24 win over the Panthers.
"Overall the guys made good choices, but executed poorly and it showed towards the end of the game," said head coach Harry King. "Due to injuries and other issues we were not as strong going into the game. It was a wake up call to our bench that they need to get it in gear."
