HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport football team had another close one on Saturday in their final road game at Michigan Tech. The Panthers (1-8, 0-7) seeking their first GLIAC win took the Huskies (4-5, 3-4) down to the wire, but a big special teams play proved to be the difference in a 17-10 loss at Sherman Field. Davenport and Michigan Tech braved the elements for most of the contest on a windy and snowy afternoon. Each defense made plays to keep the score low as it was just 7-3 in favor of the Huskies at halftime.
Kevin Kirkland opened the scoring for MTU on a 18-yard touchdown catch from Garrett Young with 10:07 left in the second quarter. The first quarter was controlled by the Huskies as they had the ball for 11:27 and out-gained the Panthers 86-9 in total yards.
Davenport took the ball over late in the second quarter down by seven and put together a scoring drive. DU went 12 plays in 49 yards and had to settle for a 30-yard field goal by
Jerred McGuire as time expired in the first half. Davenport had the ball for 9:10 of the quarter and gained 60 yards including 48 through the air on 4-of-4 passing. The Panthers converted 3-of-6 on third down in the first half well above their season average.
DU threatened to score near the end of the third quarter on a 10-play drive which stalled out at the MTU 17 as
Keion Powers was stopped on 4th-and-1 for no gain. The fourth quarter featured the most scoring as the sun began to shine. Davenport took their first lead of the game at the 7:50 mark as Haiden Majewski threw a short pass to
Nate Couturier who ran 47 yards after the catch for his second receiving touchdown this season. The Panthers' lead of 10-7 was very short-lived however as Eric Kostreva returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a 14-10 lead with 7:38 remaining.
Majewski was intercepted on the second play of the next drive as MTU took over at the DU 33. The defense rose up and limited the Huskies to a 34-yard field goal by Evan Gornick with 1:48 on the clock. The Panthers moved the ball to the MTU 49 trying to tie the game with a touchdown, but
Cody Long was intercepted at the MTU 42. The Huskies knelt down twice with Davenport out of timeouts to end the contest.
The Panthers ended with 163 total yards out-gaining the Huskies by 16 yards. Each team had 12 first downs and pass protection was a key as both teams recorded five sacks.
Keion Powers led the team in rushing (47 yards) and receiving (40 yards).
Brian Williams had an interception for the third straight game and finished with six tackles.
Kye Black had a program-record 18 tackles (10 solo) with three sacks for a loss of 16 yards.
Arnell Anderson had a career-high 13 tackles and forced a fumble.Â
