Game Recap: Football |

Panthers downed by Ferris State 26-0

DU led on defense by Kye Black and C.J. Thornton with 11 tackles

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The GLIAC football matchup between Davenport and Ferris State was played under terrible conditions on Saturday, including a 40-minute weather delay early in the first quarter. In the end, the teams battled it out for over three hours of game time in a 26-0 decision in favor of No. 12 Ferris State in their first visit to Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Davenport was fighting all game long and were saddled with poor field position all day. The Bulldogs started their drives on average at their 46-yard line while the Panthers were starting their drives on average at their own 19-yard line. That formula at times proved to be too much to overcome for the Davenport defense.

Ferris State missed a field goal on their first possession and then both teams came up empty until the Bulldogs finally cracked the scoreboard on their seventh drive of the game. Travis Russell was intercepted at the DU 2 on the previous possession and then Davenport gave it right back on the next play as Cody Long was picked by Tavierre Thomas at the DU 23. Two plays later, it was Dion Earls on a reverse rushing for 22 yards to the end zone with 9:38 left in the second quarter. Ferris State added to their lead later in the quarter on an eight-play, 42-yard drive. The Bulldogs rushed the ball effectively and a 15-yard penalty against the Panthers helped sustain the scoring drive. Davontae Harrington carried it in from one yard on third-and-goal with 2:26 left in the second quarter. The extra point snap was bobbled and it was 13-0 as Davenport got the ball back. The Panthers did not cross midfield on offense until the final drive of the half as they moved 47 yards in eight plays. The final play of the half was a Jerred McGuire 38-yard field goal missed wide left.

Ferris State stopped Davenport at their own 30 on fourth down to start the second half and two drives later added it their lead again. Russell ran the ball three times for 37 yards to start the drive and the Bulldogs moved into the red zone. FSU got the ball to the DU 1 but a false start moved them back five yards. Davenport held on the next three plays but Russell performed a great fake and kept the ball for a two-yard score on fourth down with 1:15 left in the third quarter. The failed extra point attempt on another bobbled snap made it 19-0.

The Bulldogs finished the scoring at 12:34 left in the fourth quarter as Russell threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Keyondre Craig and the PAT was converted for a 26-0 lead. Davenport finished with 156 yards of offense and allowed 367 including 215 on the ground. Ferris State was just 6-of-18 on third down and completed 11-of-36 passes with one interception by DeShaun Lowery. Kye Black and C.J. Thornton led the team with 11 tackles while Black had four tackles for loss. Zach Sieler led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss.
