Panthers drop 33-0 decision at Saginaw Valley State

DU did not allow an offensive touchdown in the second half

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Davenport football team traveled to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon and dropped a 33-0 decision to the Cardinals in GLIAC play. The Panthers and Cardinals were both seeking their first GLIAC win this season and the Cardinal offense had a strong showing in the first half building a 20-0 lead after 30 minutes of action.

Marcus Edmondson and Ryan Conklin opened the scoring with 6:33 left in the first quarter on a 42-yard touchdown hookup down the home sideline. Edmondson made a double move and was wide-open to give SVSU a 7-0 lead. The next two scoring drives for the Cardinals came off a short field with great field position. Nate McCrary capped off a 10-play, 40-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run pushing his way into the end zone after initial progress was stopped. The next score was set up after a botched punt handle with the Cardinals taking over at the DU 39. On the next play, Chad Gailliard ran a post route to the middle of the field and Conklin hit him in stride for a 39-yard score and a 20-0 lead after an Alex Kenrick extra point.

Saginaw Valley State used over eight minutes on the first drive of the third quarter, but the Davenport defense held on 4th down and one as Keon Jacobs and Lamar Robbins stopped McCrary for a loss of one yard. The Cardinals increased their lead to 26-0 with 2:36 left in the third as Damaris Woods recovered a bad snap over the punter's head in the end zone.

The Cardinal defense made sure all three facets got a touchdown on the afternoon with 9:43 left in the game as Cody Long was intercepted by Donnell Alexander who returned it 19 yards for a 33-0 lead. The final stats showed SVSU gain 318 yards and limit the Panthers to 44 yards. DU was led in rushing by quarterback William James with 30 yards. Haiden Majewski saw his first action under center in his career and completed one pass for 15 yards. C.J. Thornton led the defense with 11 tackles while Kye Black recorded 10 tackles including seven solos.
