Women's Basketball Falls 70-63 at Maryville

DU (0-2) shot 50 percent in the first half

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Davenport women's basketball team is ready to leave "The Gateway City" after a loss for the second straight day. The Panthers (0-2) battled tough in both games over the weekend but fell 70-63 at Maryville (1-1) on Saturday. Davenport suffered a gut-wrenching overtime loss yesterday but came out with a 19-17 lead after the first quarter. DU shot 50 percent (7-of-14) and held the Saints to 25 percent (4-of-16).

Davenport continued to shoot well in the second quarter going 5-of-10 including 3-of-4 behind the arc. Maryville caught fire going 9-of-14 in the quarter to take a 36-33 lead at halftime. The game remained close in the third quarter as the largest lead was four points by DU at 46-42 after a Jenna Falkenberg layup with 2:48 left. Maryville closed out the quarter with an 11-4 run to lead 53-50. Mary Barton hit a triple for the Saints with 12 seconds left in the quarter.

Maryville scored the first four points to start the fourth quarter but DU responded with six straight points on baskets by Kelsey Crockett, Amanda Merz and Martyna Pioro. Down the stretch, Barton made two free throws to put Maryville up 62-58 with 2:04 remaining. Kortney Deurloo's layup cut it to a deuce and then Ali Ringering's free throws pushed it back to four at 64-60 with 1:21 left. DU split at the line on their next possession and then Barton again made both at the stripe for a 66-61 lead. Emily Severn missed a triple and the Panthers had to foul Kayla Steward who made both free throws for a 68-61 lead with 22 seconds to go. After a Merz miss from downtown, Barton buried both at the line to seal it. The Saints won it in the fourth quarter by going 10-of-10 at the line despite going just 3-of-12 from the floor.

Maryville went 19-of-21 at the charity stripe for the game while Davenport was 10-of-15. Pioro set a career-high with 13 points going 5-of-6 and 3-of-3 from the arc. Severn notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and played all 40 minutes. Hannah Wilkerson added 12 points in 28 minutes. Crockett scored nine points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds.

"It was another valiant effort on the road today," head coach Rick Albro said. "We made costly mistakes which continues to be the difference between winning and losing. I was proud of the effort and see improvements daily."

The Panthers will have their home opener on Monday, Nov. 13 as they host Cornerstone (2-4) at 7 p.m. at the Student Center.
