Panthers sweep Golden Grizzlies and the Good Luck Duck stays in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers took on ACHA rivals Oakland University in a two game mini series on Friday and Saturday. Davenport won both games to help keep the Good Luck Duck in Grand Rapids. The game on Friday was played at Oakland and needed overtime to determine a winner. Luke Cowan scored the game winning goal just 44 seconds into the overtime period to give DU the win in game one. The game on Saturday was played on home ice for DU and resulted in a dominating 6-3 win over the Golden Grizzlies.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Davenport got a slow start on the road, giving up two goals to the Golden Grizzlies in the first period. The Panthers got whistled for three penalties during the period, but successfully defended their net while being a man down during those penalties. Oakland held a two goal lead heading into the second period.
-The Panthers fought back in the second period, scoring two unanswered goals to tie up the game. Cory Bussing knocked the first goal in during the 12th minute on an even strength effort, assisted by Cowan. The next goal for DU was scored by Everett Thompson with just under two minutes to go in the period, assisted by Adam Goudelock and Alex Hulford.
-Davenport had to fight back from being down multiple times in this game. Oakland opened the third period with a goal to take a 3-2 lead. The Panthers needed a goal to tie the game and Ian Thompson came through in the clutch. I. Thompson scored with just over nine minutes to play in regulation. Neither team scored during the last nine minutes of the third period and the game went into overtime.
-Cowan was quick to score in the overtime period, needing only 44 seconds before netting the game winner, assisted by Wade Weisgerber.
-Four players scored one goal each, Bussing, E. Thompson, I. Thompson and Cowan.
-Goudelock and Hulford both had two assists each.
-Nate Ferris spent 60:44 in the net and gathered 24 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-With their home crowd cheering them on the Panthers scored the first goal of the game during the second game. I. Thompson scored a power play goal on an unassisted effort in minute number eight. Oakland scored a goal late in the period to tie the game 1-1. Davenport, with only 10 seconds left in the period, got a goal from E. Thompson to give them a one goal lead after the first period.
-Davenport exploded offensively in the second period, scoring four straight goals to open the period and take a 6-1 lead. Sherman Mowery got the first goal, then Tyler Layle scored, following by Cowan and then Hulford.
-The Panthers didn't score in the third period, but the high scoring second period proved to be the different maker.
-All six DU goals were scored by different players; I. Thompson, E. Thompson, Mowery, Layle, Cowan and Hulford all scored.
-E. Thompson was the only DU player to assists on two different goals.
-Jason Rhynold recorded 36 saves in net over the three periods.
 
UP NEXT
Davenport travels to Chicago this weekend to compete against the University of Illinois on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is at 7:30 pm and Saturday's starts at 4:30 pm.
