ADRIAN, Mich. – The women's basketball team lived on the edge for the second straight game as junior
Momo Neal once again made the game-winning basket late in the game for a Panther victory. Davenport (27-2, 21-0 WHAC) got lucky 21 as Neal put DU ahead with eight seconds left on a runner in the paint for an 82-81 lead. Siena Heights, ranked 25th in the latest NAIA coaches poll, called timeout and advanced the ball to midcourt. Ashley Perry drove the lane and freshman
Jenna Falkenberg, returning after missing the last three games, blocked the shot which was grabbed by Neal with one second to go. Neal missed the first free throw and made the second for an 83-81 lead. The inbounds pass was deflected by DU as the buzzer sounded.
Davenport picked up their 13th straight win and kept their dream of a unbeaten WHAC regular season alive. The team travels to 18th-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday for the finale but it won't be an easy task as the Warriors have won 10 in a row.
The Panthers trailed 45-41 at halftime as both teams shot 50 percent in the first quarter (11-of-22) and under 30 percent in the second quarter. The third quarter was huge for the Panthers outscoring the Saints, 25-15. SHU shot 35.3 percent while DU shot 52.9 percent.
Emily Severn had 11 points in the quarter and shot 3-of-6 behind the arc. Siena Heights led 51-43 early in the quarter after a three-point play by Sharmaine Wills. Severn's triple cut the lead to five and then DU chipped into the lead. The Panthers took a 58-57 lead with 3:16 left in the third on a pair of
Molly Babbs free throws. Severn then canned another triple for a four-point lead.
DU led 66-60 after three quarters and looked like they were going to run away as they led 74-62 after another Severn bomb with 7:30 remaining and a timeout by the Saints. The home team quickly cut the lead down to 78-73 with 4:15 left on a pair of Perry freebies. Jaaliyah Arrington's three-pointer cut the lead to 80-76 with 2:50 on the clock and neither team scored for 1:20 when Perry completed a three-point play at the 1:30 mark. SHU made it an 8-0 run with 57 seconds to play as April Watson's layup gave the Saints an 81-80 lead. Watson, the reigning WHAC Player of the Week, scored a game-high 29 points (12-of-24 FG) and grabbed 10 rebounds in 36 minutes.
Azalea Miller was whistled for an offensive foul 60 feet away from the hoop giving the ball to Davenport.
Chri Carter missed a layup and Falkenberg grabbed the rebound as a timeout was granted with 23 seconds to go. That set up the Neal basket on a tough shot as she finished with six points, five rebounds and four assists. Severn led the team with 18 points before fouling out late in the fourth for the first time this season.
Mallory Sewell scored 17 points on 7-of-12 from the floor in 20 minutes. Falkenberg grabbed 11 boards and blocked a pair of shots in 16 minutes. Carter finished with 10 points, six assists and four steals in 24 minutes.
