Panthers Clobber Eastern Michigan During Two Game Series

Davenport won 14-1 during the first game and 19-3 during the second

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport handed out a beating during the two game mini-series with Eastern Michigan over the weekend. The Panthers defeated the Eagles by a score of 14-1 during the first game in Ypsilanti, Michigan and won the second game by a score of 19-3 at the Patterson Ice Arena. Over the two games, DU outscored the Eagles 33-4 and outshot Eastern Michigan 154-34. Davenport improves to 26-6-1 on the season and will take the second seed heading into the GLCHL Playoffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-From the moment the puck was dropped the Panthers were firing shots at the Eagles goaltender. Davenport connected on four shots during the first period and took a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Kody Polin led DU during the period as he scored two goals. For the four goals, seven different players tallied an assist.
-Four other players wanted to join in on the scoring exhibition for DU as they combined for six goals during the second period. Eastern Michigan finally got on the scoreboard during the 17th minute of the period and Davenport held a 10-1 lead after two periods. Alex Hulford and Everett Thompson each scored two goals during the period. Brad Reitter assisted on three different goals and Michael Gessler assisted on two.
-Davenport mirrored what they did in the first period by scoring four un-answered goals to finish the game. The team went on to win 14-1 and outshot the Eagles 68-18 during the game.
-Everett Thompson netted a hat trick during the game.
-Four different players assisted on three goals, Chris Eckler, Jordan Simmonds, Aaron Beally and Reitter.
-Jason Rhynold played the whole game in net and saved 17 of the 18 shots he faced.

Game 2 (Saturday, February 18)
Final Score: Davenport 19, Eastern Michigan 3
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 26-6-1, Eastern Michigan 3-27-0

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Before this game started the Panthers recognized their five seniors, Polin, Simmonds, Abounader, Beally and Eckler.
-Following the presentation, Davenport rode the emotions of senior presentations and exploded for eight first period goals. Louie Abounader and Joey Ogden each scored two goals. Seniors Eckler and Beally both assisted on two goals during the period. Davenport took an 8-0 lead after the first period.
-The Panthers improved upon their eight goal first period with 11 goals during the second period. Davenport led 18-0 before the Eagles scored their first goal late in the 19th minute of play. Alex Hulford tallied two goals and Alyx Fonseca netted two as well.
-Davenport cooled off during the last period, as they were shutout by Eastern Michigan.
-Three different players recorded hat tricks during the game, Abounader, Ogden and Hulford.
-Eckler led everyone in assists with four.
-Tanner Swift got the nod to play the whole game and had 13 saves.
 
UP NEXT
Davenport travels to Ohio on Friday to take on Kent State in the first round of the GLCHL Playoffs. The Panthers were seeded second for the tournament; the game will start at 8:00 p.m.
